MirrorWorlds: An Armenian Student in China Bridging Cultures Through Virtual Reality

When Artem Muradyan first visited China as a tourist in 2018, he didn’t expect to return years later as a student at Shanghai’s Tongji University—or that he’d create a groundbreaking VR project merging Armenian heritage with Indonesian culture. Developed in collaboration with his Indonesian classmate, Jesslyn Ramlan, MirrorWorlds: Culture Reimagined utilizes virtual reality to transport users through symbolic mirrors, unveiling traditional attire, ornaments, ancient legends, arts, and crafts in an immersive digital space. Having participated in the Chinese Bridge competition in 2019, Artem noticed how little Chinese audiences knew about Armenia—a gap the international team filled by making cultural exchange interactive and engaging.
The joint project has captivated Chinese viewers, who praised its fresh approach to cultural storytelling. Unlike traditional showcases, MirrorWorlds lets users “step into” scenes, examining intricate ornaments or experiencing folklore firsthand. Many were especially curious about Armenian elements, which felt new and intriguing, while the Indonesian components added another layer of cross-cultural discovery. The VR format’s interactivity kept audiences engaged, with one noting how it transformed passive watching into active exploration. For Artem and Jesslyn, this response highlights the power of technology and collaboration to make heritage feel alive and accessible across borders.
Beyond innovation, MirrorWorlds reflects the creators’ belief in culture as a dynamic conversation. By blending Armenian, Indonesian, and Chinese perspectives, this international partnership is redefining how traditions can be shared in the digital age. Now studying at Tongji University, Artem hopes to expand the project with more cultures and languages, imagining a future where anyone can “walk through” a virtual portal to connect with distant heritage. Together with Jesslyn, their work stands as proof that the most meaningful bridges aren’t just physical—they’re built through creativity, technology, and a shared desire to understand one another.
